THE SCENARIO
In Bengal this in-migration is fuelled by the attraction of the better livelihood opportunities in the cities and is compounded by the increasing scarcity of land and resource in the countryside, which push the rural dwellers to the cities. The destinations of this vast majority of these migrants exist slum colonies, where living is cheap and accessible. For last 12 years of its existence CALCUTTA AVANT-GARDE, questions social structures along with the poor and vulnerable, with the aim to entitle and empower them to participate in a process of meaningful change. The heart of CALCUITA AVANT-GARDE mission lays the conviction that the collective destinies of the human race are indeed bound together. A society with pockets of affluence surrounded by a growing mass of inequity and misery will finally prove to be disastrous and untenable. For a genuine, sustainable and lasting social system, sharp difference in income and opportunities must give way to a more equitable distribution. Thus, CALCUTTA AVANT- GARDE struggle has revolved around creating access and enabling processes to a gamut of rights and opportunities for the Marginalized, within the human rights framework. CALCUTTA AVANT-GARDE will shape many interventions to suit the needs of a diverse group of constituents in a constantly changing socio-economic climate. They include women, children, pavement dwellers, unorganized workers, youth, slum-dwellers and landless labourers in urban areas as well as rural areas. The thrust will be to make village more and more liveable and bar the villagers to migrate to the cities to find better quality of life. |
